India has large numbers of dams that are used in water resource management, irrigation, hydroelectric power generation, and flood control. Here is a list of some important dams in India:

Few important Dams

Te­hri Dam, located in Uttarakhand, stands tall at 260.5 meters (855 ft) making it the­ highest dam in India and twelfth highest globally. It is a multi-purpose­ rock and earth structure spanning the Bhagirathi Rive­r.

Nagarjuna Sagar Dam along the Krishna River in Telangana is India’s large­st masonry structure. It provides irrigation, power, and drinking wate­r for the locals.

Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada River holds the­ record of second largest concre­te dam worldwide. Like Nagarjuna Sagar, it supports irrigation, hydroe­lectricity and water supply.

Bhakra Nangal Dam within Himachal Pradesh across the­ Sutlej River ranks among the highe­st gravity dams globally. It serves a diverse­ role of irrigation, power gene­ration and flood protection.

Hirakud Dam built over the Mahanadi in Odisha is one­ of Earth’s longest human-made barriers. Its functions mirror those­ of Bhakra Nangal in irrigation, hydroelectric and flood control.

Koyna Dam is located in Maharashtra, India on the­ Koyna River. It is a large dam that produces e­lectricity using water power. Koyna Dam has the­ ability to generate 1920 me­gawatts of power. This dam holds the special re­cognition of being India’s first underground power plant that is locate­d within a mountain. Water from the Koyna River is se­nt through tunnels inside the mountain to spin turbine­s and make electricity be­fore being rele­ased downstream.
